On behalf of the 15,000 members of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 18, we welcome you to our website. Local 18 has been serving the needs of Ohio Operating Engineers for more than seventy years. Our jurisdiction covers eighty-five counties in Ohio and four in northern Kentucky. In Ohio, only three counties are not covered by Local 18: Mahoning, Columbiana, and Trumbull. In Kentucky, the four counties covered are Boone, Kenton, Campbell, and Pendleton.
We have tried to be as comprehensive as possible in displaying our current information. To contractors in Ohio, or coming to Ohio, we welcome your inquiries. To potential new members, or to groups wishing to organize, we urge you to contact us in complete confidentiality.
Together, with our employers, Local 18 has a very extensive training program which is also displayed on this website. We constantly urge longstanding members, as well as new members, to continue to train and upgrade their skills in order to remain competitive in today's industry.
In October, 1939, six autonomous unions came together to form Local 18 of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Hoisting and Portable Branch. The territorial jurisdiction assigned to the new local union was 85 Ohio counties and four northern Kentucky counties. These are separated into six geographic districts. Learn our history.
The International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) was formed in 1896 and currently has 400,000 members in 138 locals in the United States and Canada.
There are three kinds of locals, and Local 18 is considered a mixed local because its membership is made up of both Operating and Stationary Engineers.
The original Hoisting and Portable Branch has become what today is known as an Operating Engineers local.
Stationary Engineers work in buildings, plants, hospitals and other facilities.
We provide Local 18 members with a Health and Welfare Plan, a pension program and quality training to meet the technological advances of the 21st century.
Local 18's mission is to maintain and improve all levels of service to our membership, improving quality of life for members and their families.
Our vision is to fairly represent all of the members in our jurisdiction to maintain a secure market presence to improve the lives of all members, and to constantly raise the bar of quality service.
